Matt Cullom Chosen to Receive the David Pickeral Memorial Scholarship

Williamsburg, VA - The Virginia Legacy is proud to announce that Matt Cullom is the 2014 recipient of the David Pickeral Memorial Scholarship.  Matt finished #1 in his class at Jamestown, was admitted to Boston College and Notre Dame and will attend Georgetown University.  He has been with the soccer club since U10-12 and U15-18, and was Captain of his club team and high school teams.   Matt received a score of 1530/1600 on his SAT and had a 4.38 GPA.  He was also a member of numerous clubs including the National Honor Society and spent his time each Fall volunteering with the School Health Initiative Program and running after school soccer programs.  VLSC Technical Director-Bobby O'Brien said, "I have known Matt for many years and his spirit, leadership and competitiveness have helped many others in many areas."

Each year the Virginia Legacy Soccer Club and the Williamsburg Soccer Foundation awards up to $1000 in scholarship aid in memory of David Pickeral.   David was a travel player with the club who suddenly passed away at age 16 on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005.   David¹s passing was subsequent to an injury he suffered while playing the game he loved.  A native and lifelong resident of Hampton, David was an honor student at Bethel High School.  He loved soccer and played with pride for the U18 Wizards Elite.  When his grandmother passed away, he took great joy in driving her 1994 Cadillac.  David also had a love for children, which was displayed by the interest he took in working along the side of his mother at the daycare center "Friends in Jesus Learning Center."

The David Pickeral Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a male or female player who intends on continuing his/her studies in college.  The applicant is not required to continue to play soccer in college.  The VLSC Board of Directors developed and oversees the application process, and a review committee appointed by the board will recommend the award of the scholarship.  The money must go towards tuition, fees, housing or books.
